Gossip Girl?

I’m new on the whole Gossip Girl mania and I just watched 9 episodes. I was wondering if any of you guys have read the book. Is the t.v. series the same as the book? or is the book better? Because I’m planning on buying the Gossip Girl books…Thanks so much!
